Backgroud: The daily activities of elderly people is associated with death. The decreased functional health status is associated with the mortality of home bound elderly patients. In this study we examined the factors which affect death of home bound elderly patients.
Methods : At October 1998 we investigated 25 home bound patients in apµûtrnent in Busan. We divided 25 subjects into 11 of¡¯home bound elderly patients(>60 yeµûs)¡¯ and 14 of ¡¯home bound younger patients(<60 years)¡¯.
Results: The mortality r¾øe of home bound elderly patients is higher than that of home bound younger patients (P=0.029). Among severe functional disabil¶ì group, home bound elder patients had high mortality rate than home bound younger patients (P=0.025). Among home bound elderly patients, ADL ¶§d IADL is significantly different between living group and death group. ¥çle ADL items (Dressing, Feed¶ìg, Transfer, Toileting) and the IADL items ( Using telelphone, Co»Àng, Cleaning and Managing medication) are significantly different between living group and death group of home bound elderly patients.
Conclusions : The motarity rate of home bound elder patients with high functional disability is high. Medical providers should have more concern to the home bound elderly patients with decreased functional health status.
